It gets tiring to write "Piefed/Lemmy/Mbin" to call our part of the Fediverse, is Threadiverse now the accepted term?

submitted by edited

I used to say “Welcome to Lemmy” to new joiners, but nowadays quite a few of them join Piefed instance, having a generic term is easier

You can’t follow Mastodon users from Lemmy or Piefed, using “Fedivers” seems too generic

I use Fediverse as threads is tied to meta

Gemini is both the Google AI and the network protocol, it seems clear which one you’re referring to depending on context

Arguably the context is very similar - it makes it seem like Threads is part of the “Threadiverse”. AFAIK it’s not? The fact that I don’t know is rather telling.

!piefed_meta@piefed.social has nothing to do with the Meta company

I, uh, don’t know what you’re trying to say. I was talking about support for the ActivityPub protocol.

I was referring to this comment ( https://discuss.tchncs.de/comment/21052151 )

And the word meta itself is used for meta communities on the Threadiverse which have nothing to do with Meta the company. Words existed before companies took them.

So you didn’t mean to reply to me in the first place?

To us maybe, as we already know what the fediverse is. To newcomers and people who haven’t really heard of it yet, it sounds like Threads and its associated software.

I’ve been on here for about two years, and I’m pretty sure that you were here before me. This stuff is part of our everyday language, whereas most people haven’t heard of Lemmy, Piefed, or Mbin. They’ve all seen the ads for Threads though

Which other word do you suggest using?

I have no idea. I just think that, unfortunately, threadiverse is going to be linked to Threads, whether we want it to be or not :(

They try to stole pour vocabulary. one more reason to keep it alive.

Personally, I use it. In my corner of Fedi, people do use it. At the end of the day, language is shaped by the people who use it. So yeah, let’s keep using it. :)

Sounds good, thank you for your comment :)

Yup I personally always use threadiverse and love to use threadiverse.link instead of lemmyverse.link

Maybe I missed something but never saw a problem with that name.

Edit: wanted to add that voyager has also started to use threadiverse.link as a share option (i believe lemsha.re as well but that service shut down).

The only concern I’ve seen with the name is that Facebook named their thing “Threads”, and so it might be confusing for people familiar with that.

I still use the term 🤷

Ahhh that was the problem! Okay I kinda understand. But I think we can refuse to let that asshole company steal words like Meta, Face & Book, Threads, etc. and act as if that was their invention.

But yeah I just kept using threadiverse because I feel like everyone here understands exactly what it is and others use it too. If people wouldn’t I wouldn’t use it I guess :)

Edit: gonna start shortening that to TV so I can just tell everyone “saw that on TV”

Threads is pretty much dead and forgotten tho?

It was feeling like older twitter for a little bit but enough ppl joined and now the algorithim is the same trash modern x is.

Ye I use threadiverse myself.

Threadiverse is fine with me. Fediverse in general, but Threadiverse is more specific imo. We’re early on the Fedi, we get to make the rules! Square is blue! Up is left and right is forward. MUAHAHAHAHA! :-D

They’ve gone mad with freedom!

Mad with freedom is the new closed garden oppression! All of the cool kids are doing it!

This could be a line from one of the dreamers in Paprika

Personally I hate “verse” lingo.

I get that. It’s like every political conspiracy is a “-gate”. But its a useful shorthand, and thats what the term needs.

Every time I explain it to someone, I roll my eyes a little at those terms, but thats what it’s called… It sounds so marketing. Trying to tell someone “join the Fediverse” feels like selling a cult, a little, lol

I may ask my wife if she’ll let me set up something for her to scroll other than TikTok, though. She’s not the type to dive into new stuff like this without good reason, but if I just go “here’s your app, all set up with stuff you’ll generally enjoy!” maybe it’ll drag her off that godawful site.

Sure, although those terms are buzzwords only, not marketing speak. Like blogiverse, definitely not marketing.

The marketing term the Social Web Foundation wants to put forward is “Open Social Web”, but that encompasses more than the threaded softwares (includes Mastodon, Peertube, etc.)

We had some issues with the term “Threadiverse” when Meta’s Threads was on the rise and in public discourse. And people started confusing this with what Mark Zuckerberg does. But I think that toned down substantially. I think Threadiverse is a good term, we might as well try again and see if the confusion is still there. And I mean it’s a super niche term anyways to talk about a certain corner of a niche itself. So I guess it’s often embedded in a context and that’d help as well. I’d go for it. And the threads are the identifying mark of this place, so it fits.

I prefer forumverse. Or more inventive : Verse

On !fediverse@piefed.social i created flair to categorize :
- forum software : threadiverse
- media software as pixelfed, peertube, vernissage : mediaverse
- blog : fediblog

But i think it is confusing and do not help a lot 🥹

I’ve seen the arguments about Forumverse that the Lemmy/Mbin/Piefed format isn’t really a forum (think NobeBB or Discourse) either

@Blaze @Snoopy foraverse is easier to pronounce and more correct Latin

@fediverse

I know Latin, unfortunately most people don’t and aren’t going to make a connection from Fora to Forum, they might even think about Flora faster then Forum

Is there a link with the word foraging or are they unrelated ?

Althought it is a english word, that they probably don’t share the same root, there may be a slight chance.

Just call it Fediverse.

Fediverse can be part. Fediverse can be all. Fediverse is the all that federates with the bit. Fediverse ought. Fediverse will be. It’s even on Poob. Poob will federate it for you. Poob will federate it for you.

It doesn’t make sense to tell someone “Welcome to the Fediverse” when they join Piefed or Lemmy as they can’t follow Mastodon or Sharkey users

Except that, apparently you can? A recent post I made on Lemmy had replies from Mastodon accounts afaict

Interacting with Lemmy threads from Mastodon is easy, the inverse not so much

Each threadiverse community is visible as a single user in Mastodon. All the comments come into one pile, not organized into clear threads. It’s a very rudimentary support. But yeah, you can join a threadiverse conversation from Mastodon, but you cannot share any Mastodon content in threadiverse.

From within Lemmy, there is zero possibility to utter anything on Mastodon, except as a reply to a message a Mastodon user has made in a threadiverse community.

It’s actually very easy checking how this conversation looks from within Mastodon! Just go to any Mastodon instance (such as http://mastodontti.fi ) with your web browser, click the search tool and search for a “user” called @fediverse@piefed.social .

Yep only Mbin achieve that :3

NodeBB too

NodeBB too, wow ! And fell free to present NodeBB here. ☺️

Lemmy and Mastodon can interact (yay federation!) but you can’t follow microblog users from Lemmy.

Up until recently, communities couldn’t follow other communities, because it’s just not a “thing” Lemmy or Piefed do. Users follow communities, yeah?

Except NodeBB tries to have communities follow communities. :)

It’s still the Fediverse. While things are connected, not everything has to be absolutely connected. There’s still work to be done.

You can waxing poetically it if you want. “Welcome to our little corner of the Fediverse” etc.

Or, if you are really that hung up on this not being the Fediverse, call it the Lemmyverse or smth.

It’s still the Fediverse. While things are connected, not everything has to be absolutely connected. There’s still work to be done.

Except that’s the premise new joiners are told when they join the Fediverse “everything is connected”.

Turns out it’s not, you have Mbin/PieFed/Lemmy on one side, then Mastodon/Sharkey/Iceshrimp on another, and the support between both is rudimentary, as people commented below

and the support between both is rudimentary, as people commented below

Not on Mbin at least.. I follow plenty of people from Mastodon/Other services from this MBin account and interact with them time from time

Mbin has 812 monthly active users: https://mbin.fediverse.observer/dailystats

Piefed 1800: https://piefed.fediverse.observer/dailystats

Lemmy 37000: https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/dailystats

If 98% of the people can’t do something, I’m going to say all of them can’t do it.

The difference is that all those platforms are absolutely open to sign up in. It’s a case of 98% of people choose not to do something, just like (say) 98% of people choose to stay on reddit so why should lemmy even be a thing, rite?

I have an account on an mbin. I’m not using it only because I’m lazy.

Threadiverse, didn’t zuckerberg call it that? Like Facebook Threads or something?

He stole it, was already being used

I just say lemmy for all that zone, but happy to switch. Threadi huh. Bit awkward but I’m sure we’ll get used to it.

I still say lemmy. Cos I’m lazy and don’t like change

Yep it’s like something from a bad sci fi movie

On the other hand, when you want people to join a Piefed instance because it has better features, they’ll why they shouldn’t join a “Lemmy.xyz” instance when you told them to join Lemmy

Has happened to me in the past when trying to get people to try the platform

I didn’t knew it was not accepted…

I mean I call the fediverse the federation so I guess I should call it the threaderation

The United Threaderation of Instances?

maybe the federation and the threadit empire!

Just keep it simple and say “The Good Internet.”
