Just because he's still got a big audience, I do wonder if we'll see any noticeable bumps in the number of linux users.

Probably gonna be temporary, but still makes me curious

Some people are going to bounce off, but this kind of publicity for linux from the once most subscribed youtube channel is great. Most videos about linux don't exactly fit the recommendation bill for a lot of Youtube viewers. Also not to mention that he emphasizes that he is "not a tech guy". And to add to that, his channel is a primarily gaming channel meaning people will not write linux off thinking it can't play any games.

If nothing else, I bet a good chunk of people will be crediting this video as the reason why they got into linux/FOSS and even STEM in general in the future.

Haha! I started watching one Pewdiepie video, I dunno, five-or-ten years ago or something, and as soon as I started the video he started screaming. I turned it off and never went back.

You would be surprised to see the contrast lol. His videos these days are pretty chill and mostly just family vlogs around Japan.

What did he do to speed up the browser startup time?

Probably removed the Flatpak and installed native?

I'm thinking he runs a script that opens the browser as a window minimised at startup. So any browser window he opens is just another window and Firefox doesn't have to startup every time

not really, native ones are still as bad and heavy as the containerized ones, especially web browsers

Glad that's working for you but for me Flatpak is noticeably slower at startup (last couple distros, like uhh Fedora, Cachy, OpenSUSE). This is not an indictment of Flatpak in general; it's a nice project. But not all of us can ruin the distributed supercomputers you're running in your laptop

I seem to recall a way to run the browser as a background service so it’s essentially always running. You just "File > New Window" when you start it.

It’s hazy though… been a while and it was when I was using SwayWM

Can’t stand YouTubers but he isn’t wrong.

he was the most subscribed one for a reason

That’s like saying Fox is the number one news channel. There’s truth to that because they are number one in broadcasting…. Not cable, not satellite, not OTT, not internet. That viewership was only 2+ million.
Number one doesn’t mean anything, except there could be a social problem.
So what he was number one of the size of a small country. What does the rest of the world have to say about that?
Makes you wonder….. at least should.

This guy just walks fresh onto the scene and starts dropping better observational comedy than I see from people with 20+ years of experience on both platforms.

IKR? My favorite part was:

Little baby windows "are owu sure you want to dewete candy crush?"

Linux: hands you a gun "Do it. You are god" Eldridge horror sounds

I expected it to be a silly video with lots of misinfo but he's just spitting for 20 minutes straight, really pleasantly surprised.

Yeah. I thought it would be a superficial video too at first but dude has drunk the koolaid and is several kilometers down the rabbit hole.

That's a nice rice even, what the hey, kinda makes me wanna fuck around in wms again

what did he do that this picture makes people leave this community?

You don't need to worry about it. His new content is that of a completely different person, and it's been more than half a decade since his last controversy.

don't look

Again, I genuinely feel that Pewds' content has changed dramatically since his early days, for the better. He seems much more considerate, thoughtful with what he says, and mellower in general. I don't think anyone should feel bad at all for liking his recent content.

But you clicked this so...

I'm gonna stick to things Pewds drew controversy over that were actually on video. Not laying out accusations, just laying out why he's a controversial figure in an unbiased fashion.

spoiler Forewarning, some of this is heavy.

Pewdiepie was a very edgy youtuber for most of his career, usually laying out unfiltered hot takes. They were all pretty normal edgy guy things. Think Idubbbz in terms of flavor.

I will say that I personally noticed a major change in his content after his slogan "Subscribe to PewDiePie" was used in the Christchurch mosque shooting in 2019. I think he realized just how toxic portions of his audience were from that tragedy, and ended up changing direction because of that. That was also mostly not in his control.

There were something like half-a-dozen controversies directly caused by his own actions, such as when he payed two people on fiver who didn't speak English to hold up a sign reading "death to all jews", and calling it a social experiment to show how people will do anything for money.

Another time he faced backlash for saying the N word during a livestream.

He also said he joined ISIS as a joke at one point.

Most of his controversies are like this, where he does some edgy inflammatory shit, realizes he went to far, apologizes, then everything goes back to the way it was before.

He started YouTube in 2006, then again in 2010 under PewDiePie. It's been more than a decade either way. It's been 6 years since his last controversy. I wouldn't worry about how people judge him now.

:::

Doesn't sound really controversial, just stupid

Fr he made a sincere apology, no bs and moved on, KSI said the P word and made the most scripted insincere apology and didn't get half the bs he did. The sad reality is success brings people who want you to fail and drop to their level of pathetic joblessness to make them feel better about themselves no matter what you do.

He's the most viewed YouTuber. It's apparently impossible for a decent person to achieve this level of success in the hate machine that is the YouTube algorithm.

great fallacy, love it

TBH that's the first video of his that I've ever watched. It's not too bad, but there's not much in the way of substance. Not for me. When I want to drain my brain after a hard work day, I'd rather watch some sci-fi.

Said the bad n word on stream.

it is the reason why he "retired" and trying to come back into the youtube scene, but i think hes largely replaced by bigger youtubers now, hes just old news. Even sniperwolf couldnt stay away long enough knowing her following would drop and people that still defends her would start suspecting she maybe a crazy stalker after all.

most of the times those are just jokes (or satire) that goes out of hand
I actually like him for challenging the over-butthurt norms
just about every comedian on earth has to go tolerate this population

Is that bad?

I'd like to preemptively direct prospective commenters' attention to rule 6 about public figures.

For the lazy

6> . (NEW!) Regarding public figures
>

We all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.

Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Lmao. What an unbelievably stupid rule.
"Just pretend everyone is cool even if they're a total loser or whatever"

You can say whatever you want about whoever you want, but this is not the place to litigate those issues. This is "Linux Memes", not "Linux Circlejerk". Have your Spicy Hot Takes somewhere else.

If you have an issue with a post because it's about or was made by a person you disagree with, kindly downvote and move on. Throwing a tantrum will never be productive.

Just say this isn’t the right place for it. No need to debase yourself and call it a tantrum.

None of the items listed in the rule state that

Nah he was right about Linux so be quiet about the racial slur stuff for sure.

Yeah, that rule is stupid and short-sighted.

Someone drops a bad word and you want to cancel them? "Why is everyone moving to the right?"

He got pissed and called someone a bleeping n word. This isn't really just a bad word its not like he said shit. It is gross behavior and it wouldn't just "slip out", as he said after the fact, if he weren't actually racist.

Average blahaj user if he's not allowed to be toxic lmao

Sure, we’ll all just ignore the fact that Tux tried to circumvent totally legitimate and logical tariffs because of rule 6.

Okay, buh-bye c/linuxmemes 😘

Next year he'll do a homelab tour.

Comments from other communities

Always love seeing popular people talking about/pushing it. The biggest thing desktop Linux was missing in the past was a critical mass of users. And, It seems to have gotten that critical mass now.

This is a good thing. Anyone saying otherwise are no different than those petty gatekeepers.

hell yeah I'm gatekeeping Nazis and his horde of enablers

brb adding a clause to GPL that makes all computers owned by Nazi losers go up in flames

You can stay on your little corner then, while the rest of the world moves forward without you.

Don't get me wrong, I hate the Nazis too. But if you can keep a bad group from using something, the same argument can be spun to keep a good group from having it too. This is why open source never discriminate.

The devs may have iron grip on the development process, and they may keep the Nazi influence out that way, but they can never impose on who may or may not use what they created.

you didn't need to write an entire novel just to convey that you enjoy polishing nazi boots with your tongue

the gpl allows everyone to use the software, whether they are curing cancer or inventing weapons of mass destruction.

You also probably learned most American/Canadian Linux users do not like anti semites nor fascist supporters or something something...at least stop giving the douche views.

That was 7 years ago. People grow up.

Not if they find they can flirt with antisemitism for shits'n'giggles and get away with it, they don't. The guy is an irresponsible moron 4 lyfe.

To my knowledge his views haven't changed

He did a 'Training like Mishima for 7 Days' video just 10 months ago who is famous for trying to coup the democratic Japanese government and reinstate Hirohito as the ruler. How is that "Growing up?"

you should probably watch that video and see what it's about

Has he apologized or indicated that he changed his views?

If they're still giving that goober views, then they have not grown up.

not a fan of PDP, but the video has been viewed 2.8 Million times in less than 24 hours. nearly beat his 3 Million video views from 3 weeks ago

yeah it looks good, at least Linux gains more attention

I'm very familliar with the "Year of the Linux Desktop" joke but I also can't remember a time previously when Linux was getting this level of mainstream attention.

Watching this video brought back memories of when I first started using Linux. I really connected with him. Linux makes you feel like you have a lot of control – like you can change things easily. Windows, on the other hand, often feels frustrating and doesn't really help you much.

What I noticed about the video is that he encourages you to try new things and be willing to make mistakes. He doesn't seem to get upset when things go wrong, which I think is helpful for viewers. He also admits that Linux isn't for everyone, which is a realistic acknowledgement. It's a good video for introducing Linux, but it doesn't overhype it either.

Exactly. It was same for me. I started with Ubuntu and switched to arch after the whole snaps thing. Arch with i3, didn't understand a lot of things. Just copied other's setup and learned through mistakes. Switched to hyprland cause Wayland is the future and wow the way he riced must be so relatable to so many here.

I used to have a waybar but noticed too many technical limitations in it. Switched to ewww, way too complex and bad documentation. Switched to ags, was good till version 2 came out which is also complicated. Now I'm on ignos shell, which is still new but gtk4 based. I love it. Rofi has remained the constant but I might try replacing it with ignis too.

Tbh i haven't tinkered a lot recently, everything just works but of something fails after an update, i have so many options to fall back to xD. There's also hyprpanel and other similar projects that you can copy in case of a problem.

Not personally a fan of Pewds, but this is a good thing. Dude’s still got 110M subscribers, he can reach an enormous viewer base. Not only that, but he’s got a magical ability to reach younger people in a way that grumpy old farts like me can’t (I’m five years older than him, which makes me a fossil). If Linux has had one problem through all its years on the good, green Earth, it’s marketing. Pewds might be just what it needs for this to finally be the Year of the Linux Desktop.

Like I commented on another post:

If someone makes the switch to Linux today, then this is the year of the Linux desktop for them.

What really defines "the year of the Linux desktop", objectively? 🤔

Very good point. Many personal journeys of discovery and liberation make for an exodus.

I like how he says not techy and then shows off a crazy rice

I think he's smarter than he lets on. Being a doofus for the whole world to see is for some reason highly profitable.

Definitely. Checks a bunch of marks:

  • wants to be in control of his computer
  • avid minimalist
  • doesn't want to be spoken to like a child by his computer
  • not afraid to try things with his computer

He's definitely got a lot of sides, it seems. 😁

I remember his Photoshop tutorials from 15 years ago. He was always geeky and smart. His content was never educational but he still used to post tutorials and stuff randomly.

This was crazy. Its such a huge media figure making a genuinely high quality and convincing 'switch to Linux' video.

Also dam I gotta try out a tiling wm.

Really wish, Drew Gooden or Danny Gonzalez try Linux. They have been very openly critical of bog tech and AI for a while. But unlike pewds I'm sure they would call out a lot of cons cause they seem more relatable to normal people than pwd who calls everyone a normie.

Okay enough now. I will bite the bullet.

I have to move to wayland and hyprland now or I will be the old weird grandpa still using Awesome WM with Xorg in 10 years. It will be ugly and I will curse a lot until everything is smoothly back in business for me but there's no way around it.

Hate the guy but good for linux's publicity

Not gonna lie this made me pick up where I left off on my linux journey. Bye Ubuntu hello Arch. One laptop down. Looking at you gaming computer, count your days..

This just reminds me of how Hitler stole and used the Buddhist symbol for his whole Nazi regime. This guy has nothing to do with Linux, but because it's him, people are now all of the sudden willing to listen. The fuck?

"Linux Mint hides the terminal"

*immediately opens terminal to demonstrate*

Uh oh, brace for the hordes of people complaining that some anticheat game doesn't work on Linux and therefore the whole thing sucks.

Maybe he doesn't play any Multiplayer games (anymore) so why should he care. But yeah I also missed that part since some big games could make problems like Fortnite or GTA V MP?

I honestly don't care about PewDiePie, I care more about his audience. And his audience is bound to expect everything to work if PewDiePie advocates for it, even if he explicitly tells them to temper their expectations. That's just how gamers are.

I don't know about you, but my grandma isn't using her PC to play Fortnite.

? I've been very consistent in not overselling linux, and calling out that overselling whenever I see it. I've been 100% Linux for 15+ years, and I really want people to use it (more users = more likely for vendors to support it). However, if you oversell it, especially to gamers who have very little patience for things not working properly, it's going to backfire.

So yeah, I'm grateful that someone as popular as PewDiePie is recommending it, I'm just a bit worried about the public perception once people realize there are caveats. It's fantastic if you're flexible about what games you play, it's not if you really need that specific MP game to work.

Grandma is totally the right market here since it does basic computing stuff really well. Gamers however, as a broad group, aren't, especially gamers interested in streamers, which are often the more social type (read: more likely to be interested in anti-cheat MP games).

I wonder what he did to optimise his Firefox startup time.

  1. Click the icon

  2. Make a cup of tea

  3. It's open and waiting for you

Probably used some flag file like BetterFox in about:config

Probably just has it run at login in the background.

I'm so happy for him. He seems so excited about Linux and has done much more customization than I have XD

holy shit this is massive news

I did not see this coming.

Haven't watched pewdiepie in years, glad to see he's still entertaining.

Isn't this guy Nazi adjacent?

Tasteless, immature, edgelord, yes. Actual fascist/Nazi, I don't think so. I've never really watched his content. And I will say this. From what I've seen in recent years, he seems to have matured a bit.

I haven't found him tastless in a long while. He seems to just be vibing living his own life at this point.

That's generally my understanding as well at this point. That and he's had a child. And seems to be making a somewhat serious attempt at parenting. And perhaps starting to look at a lot of this stuff through the eyes of a father

Having a kid/kids really does change a man. Or person. In many ways.

Yes it absolutely can. Here's hoping he continues down that path.

Same. He really does seem a lot more chill nowadays since I last checked him out. Never was a follower but you can clearly see a difference between a single video like 5-10 years ago and this now.

The bar for matured for someone with his history should be higher, especially in todays world.

Like making a video speaking against alt right edgelords and Nazis.

I didn't say he was mature. I said he's matured a little bit. I absolutely agree he should probably make some decent public apologies for the stupid s* he's done / said. But by the same token. When people do make progress no matter how small it is we can acknowledge it.

What's with his history?

Used the n-word on stream, promoted alt-right content, and some other racist shit.... Google it for details.

Quite frankly, Nazi-adjacent is bad enough, especially when he's made no effort to own up to the problems he's caused. It seems like he very deliberately tries to skirt the line of plausible deniability.

I agree. That said he has shown some small signs of maturing. Hopefully someday he will do that. I agree it's needed. I have a feeling as a young parent he's going to learn all about imitatable acts. And hopefully he will understand and think better about them.

He did a video shouting out 10 lesser known youtube channels that he liked and it turned out one guy who did movie reviews or something had some antisemetic social media posts.

Ok so it was anime reviews not movies. Nothing in that holds any factual information different to what i said, it just frames it aggressively.

The second was part of a video showing off fiverr. The guys he paid made a business of writing whatever outrageous stuff people wanted on a sign and posing with it. He had them write something outrageous on a sign and pose with it.

The mans uploaded thousands of videos as the most watched youtube channel on the planet. Any mistake hes made is easy carrion for vultures to farm outrage off of.

The important thing is that hes apologized and redacted any content and statements that could be construed as racism or bigotry, and has clearly stated repeatedly that thats not what he believes.

In the current political climate when the twitch is openly antisemetic and news networks (fox) are calling for genocide, i wouldnt take that for granted.

Screw that guy.

At least for me its not important what kind of person he is.
I quite like that a very influental person in the gaming sphere promotes linux gaming.
Because more users means more content and support

I don’t know what to say except I’m sorry you’re ok with that kind of behavior.

They didn't say they're okay with their behavior, they said they appreciate promoting Linux, because more people using Linux is a good thing for all Linux users.

I fail to see how welcoming Nazis like him benefits the Linux community

Two things:

  • who's welcoming him? I've only seen excitement about what his video might mean for Linux adoption. I don't think anyone is saying he should be a spokesman or anything.
  • I don't see evidence of him being a Nazi, I only see evidence of him being an immature streamer; then again, I've probably only watched a total of like 2 min of his content because I don't like his style

I don't care about him enough to look further, I only care that he has a sizeable audience and is saying positive things about Linux. That's exciting, because that could push Linux adoption a bit higher. That's literally the extent of how much I care about him. I'm also worried we could get net negative press if people have trouble with it, but either way it's exciting.

The same goes for literally any influential person talking about Linux. I don't like LTT, but I was excited about the handful of Linux videos they apparently made. Maybe there are others, idk, I don't watch most of the popular streamers.

didn't know making Nazi jokes and saying the n word as a grown man is immature. curious how easily white men get infantilized so they can avoid accountability

Why? He's like the best big time youtuber and isn't shitty

Because he's a racist shithead.

I've never heard of this before, would you enlighten me?

He's said and done a lot of antisemitic things and spread Nazi ideology.

https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/2/17/14613234/pewdiepie-nazi-satire-alt-right

https://www.newsweek.com/pewdie-youtube-nazi-t-series-racist-anti-semitic-youtuber-subscribers-1252695

Much like Mr Beast and other top YouTubers, he only cares about himself and has used controversies of other YouTubers to try to take the spotlight off the fucked up things he's done.

https://www.polygon.com/2018/1/11/16878068/logan-paul-pewdiepie-youtube

I feel lucky that I never got into his content. I heard so much about him as a kid, and I only recently started hearing about the Nazi stuff.

If you don't know what he did, I have a specific gamer word and bridge in PUBG that I need to introduce you to

Exactly...what a fucking ----

Racist

You know he's a Linux user because tells everyone he uses Linux without being asked.

He was asked tho, he built a pc and installed linux on it without mentioning it and people started asking about it.

Cool. I use Linux too, by the way.

That's how we know he isn't a Tool fan.

As a Tool fan I can tell you that you are correct.

Installing Linux was a good decision.

I have not gone back to Microsoft Windows.

Don't listen to people telling you it's hard. I don't have any IT degree or engineering degree

Installing it was easy. Linux is elegant, secure and powerful. I love it.

Currently the bar to installing it is in the tech savvy area. If you have enough knowledge about computers to be a gamer you can be a linux user. Of course if you have to ask your SO or child for help with a computer, its not for you but tbh windows is also too complicated for some people. Once you have it installed, someone with 0 computer knowledge will find mint easier than windows for example.

If you don't use many devices it's fine.

Or rely on software that is not available in Linux and can’t be emulated, which unfortunately applies to both my work and personal use

It’s exactly this. There are SteamOS-like systems out there (Bazzite and CachyOS) but it’s a pain if you don’t know what you’re doing. Needless to say, Enterprises will be using Windows for a very long time since they can easily restrict software and such - and a lot of their software is Windows-based only.

Yeah every thread is basically “lol bro just use Linux, skill issue”… I’m very comfortable with Linux, shell scripting and all those things. Been doing is almost 30 years. There are a wide range of things that are just not supported, which makes it a non-starter for a lot of people.

It's because, for the vast majority of people, it isn't an issue. Web browsers work fine and gaming is pretty much solved. If you're doing something technical enough to require specific software then you're technical enough to figure out if it works for you. If you aren't then it will work for you, and solve a lot of the issues Windows causes too.

Doesn’t change the fact that I would love to get off of Windows but still rely on it! I am a technical person and have discovered that currently Linux is just not an option for my needs.

I wanted to give new life to an old acer laptop/tablet hybrid. I installed Linux, but the webcam and microphone just won't work no matter what. The power button also doesn't work.

There's still a long way to go before any casual user would accept this.

Your edge case is not indicative of a larger trend.

The good news is this isn't an issue for most people, it was free, and your device was already doing so poorly with Windows you felt it was at the end of its life, so even not working perfectly it still worked.

Edit: Also, Linux isn't one thing. Your distro may not have included the packages to make those devices work, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. You could have searched for a solution, or perhaps a different distro would work.

Work should supply you with a managed device. That's out of your control.

I'm genuinely curious though - what 'personal use' software do you run that isn't supported in Linux?

I DJ on twitch, but haven’t found software that’s compatible with my hardware, and I also do it on VRchat which has anti-cheat and so it can’t run at all. There are other smaller things but that’s the deal breaker.

What do you mean? I've never had any issues with multiple devices. They're... Just different devices.

I don't know if this is what they meant, but what's stopping me from fully switching is that I have a bunch of peripheral devices with windows-only drivers

Ah, that makes sense. I thought they were talking about laptop, desktop, kids computer, tablet, etc. and was like ¿...? Linux works next to everything better than anything else.

Anyway, I see what you mean. I got a temperature monitor that needed to be set up using their proprietary software that they only made for Windows, wine didn't work so I actually ended up setting up a tiny win 10 VM so I could set it up. Easier and safer than dual booting with Windows around. Besides that though, I've always been able to find a workaround.

Many of them work without having to install anything. You could try a live boot USB and see what of them doesn't work to get an idea how difficult it'll be.

(possibly needless) anecdote

My dad is a Windows "power user" and it's funny trying to talk to him about Linux because there are so many things unique to Windows that were essentially OS problems foisted onto "power users" that he is concerned about and a lot of them don't really apply (e.g. anti-virus, drive letters, installing drivers for everything, etc.).

TBH I kinda like the whole "drive letter" thing. But I also understand mount points, so I don't really miss it, but still. It's nice to have one single window to see all of your internal & external drives, home folders, and network shares. And yes, I'm aware I can do this in Linux as well. Just needs extra configuration - which is not a bad thing.

Nautilus shows me that stuff next to each other out of box on Ubuntu. It just doesn't have drive letters.

Oh yeah I've already dual booted. Its mostly musical instrument related stuff that's stopping the full switch over. Like the programs to edit presets on my guitar pedal and synth are not huge fans of Linux. I would say for most people though, you could probably switch them to Linux and they wouldn't even notice

I was surprised to have a fairly unusual setup with fairly unusual peripherals, and everything pretty much worked out of the box, except for one software (philips hue sync) for which there is an open source alternative (huenicorn, and it wasn't built-in as Linux drivers are, because it's specialized and requires a special interface)

I have 2 servers, 6 containers, a raspi, a desktop, and a laptop all running linux just fine. My two phones send notification updates to my laptop via kde connect

I have lots of devices on linux and they all play nice together

The amount of people crying about pewds is insane

Yeah why do people have such strong views against it?

Also Linux is a great anti tech giant alternative.

I have, we're a multi-OS houshold. Linux, Steam Deck, Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android.

Different tools for different purposes. You wouldn't have just one kind of screwdriver, right?

No.
But if I only need a specific screwdriver cause none other fit these screws, it costs $200 and plays ads while I hold it, then I'll use different screws instead.

I get having Linux and Windows, after all you need a backup solution for when you can't use Linux. But why do you also have a Mac?

Then I guess iOS makes sense if you have a Mac, but why also have Android?

My wife is an Apple fangirl. :) She has the watch too!

Linux = Freedom, customizability
MacOS = Usability
Windows = ???

Windows for interoperability.

Try job hunting without a Windows machine. Good luck!

(My wife hates it when she hits websites that don't work properly and starts swearing, then I ask "Are you using a real browser or just Safari?" - "FUCK YOU!" Somehow we're still married. 😀)

Try job hunting without a Windows machine. Good luck!

I don't have any problem job hunting on a Linux box. Why would that matter?

Quite a lot of job portals are not only Windows dependent, they can even be I.E./Edge dependent.

Requires Windows to apply? Easily in the “nope” pile. Which is a privilege, I realize.

Yup. If you're on unemployment and have to hit an application quota, you can't afford to be picky. :)

Firefox with user agent switcher extension. Problem solved.

Are you using a real browser or just Safari?

I used to do web development, Safari is honestly worse then IE6

It's godawful, so many things don't work in Safari and it's because Apple can't stand other people coming up with "standards". :)

Can you fullscreen windows under MacOS yet?

Unless I misunderstand, you've been able to do that since around 2011.

M4 Mac user here happy to shed some light onto this. It's actually very intuitive:

"Full screen" on Mac means the current App window becomes a new temporary virtual desktop, which is placed after your normal virtual desktops. It also turns off the status bar / app menu, although you don't get that screen space back because of the camera notch, it's just blacked out.

Note that how many virtual desktops you have and which one is selected is specific to each display. So if you like multitasking, it really helps if you're good at remembering all of them in the correct order including any fullscreen apps and the display they were on. And I hope you don't mind performing the same swiping gesture multiple times to get back to your fullscreen app. Also you can't move it between displays.

You might just want to maximize your app window instead. Though you may need third-party software to do that.

I've used apps in fullscreen for as long as it's been possible, and I've honestly never found it confusing at all.

You can move them across displays. Just open Mission Control then drag it from one screen to another. Or drag it to a desktop if you want.

As for maximising; just double click the bar at the top of the window. No extra software needed.

Now that macOS supports window tiling there's a number of ways to lay out app windows. Fuck Stage Manager though. I've never been able to work out the point of it.

I don't even know whether I understand I just hear MacOS users griping about fullscreen, and a quick google gave quite recent results. Especially with fullscreen being incompatible with other windows on top (each fullscreen window necessary is on its own workspace) which would be highly annoying in Blender. You can configure blender to have file open dialogues, render results etc. in its main window, but certain stuff like preferences always open a second one.

I don't know why people would gripe. There's a bunch of different ways to resize windows in macOS. You can fullscreen them into their own virtual desktop, and sure, unless you drag another app alongside then no, that's not compatible with other windows at the same time. Personally, I use fullscreen for apps that I don't need to interact, or that I want to have full focus on. iTunes/Music for example, is kept to the far right of the spaces on my right hand monitor. I know where it is and it's easy to access without taking up space on the desktop.

But you can also make them fill the regular desktop by double clicking the bar at the top of the window. Or you can drag windows to various sides of the screen to resize them, the same way you can with Linux and Windows.

And yeah, there's Stage Manager too, but honestly, I've never really seen the point. Not on a Mac anyway.

Woe is the day that I decide to take computer advice from a twitch streamer...

I admire the perpetual Linux optimism but man if I could make money betting against you I would (I'd feel a little evil about it, but I need the cash).

When corporate slop all around us is continuing to thrive despite lower and lower quality products and receiving government support now too, to think the big money makers will somehow lose traction in a meaningful way to open source enthusiasm is niave imo.

I'm not even sure Taylor swift could make Linux happen this year, nevermind this racist dirt bag.

It definitely won't happen as long as the corporate world is slaved to Microsoft. We actually have a few Linux computers on our domain at work and they're a pain to administer as are the four Macs that we have.

Maybe, but you may as well try. Computers are going to be a core tool for humanity for a long time so we should be able to own them.

Bruh, my username checks out. Admittedly not my daily driver, but run off a bootable every once in awhile.

I didnt mean you had to try Linux. I ment we should try be optimistic about Linux since its realistically the only chance we have to get an open computing platform into the hands of humanity.

Oh. Yes, well I envy the bliss of those that have optimism about much of anything these days.

I feel like the GUI'S and user experience have barely changed in the last ten years since I started using linux. You still need to use the terminal for basic things like installing WiFi drivers when your distro didn't automarically install it and smooth scrolling on a trackpad has been garbage for years.

Needing to fiddle to install basic drivers on a 2012 macbook air is kinda unacceptable in this day and age. I had to pull put a USB Ethernet jack and go through three updates and restarts for the drivers to finally pop up. I like tinkering so I don't mind, but a regular person with basic computer skills would have no clue what to do.

Your laptop may be 13 years old, but Apple is notorious for their walled garden and surely never officially supported Linux on it, or did they? So it's probably the worst example.

NO MY WALLED GARDEN ANTI CONSUMER OVERPRICED APPLE PRODUCT DOESNT HAVE WIFI DRIVERS THIS IS THE FAULT OF THE NERDS THAT FIGHT FOR TECHNOLOGY INDEPENDENCE OF BIG COMPANIES LIKE THE ONE I DECIDED TO INVEST IN WAH WAH

Nazi YouTubers fuck off.

Can we reserve that word for actual Nazis that want to commit genocide, not edgy 15-year old like personalities?

What he did with the sign was arguably very cringe, but it's pathetic to compare that to someone who actually believes X group of people deserve to die.

If we label everyone a Nazi, the word means nothing and when actual Nazis show up(they are) we're fucked.

It's long past being meaningless at this point, other than just a red flag of a toxic individual.

I love my Lemmy client having the ability to label people. I already had you labeled as a Nazi apologist before opening this thread so it tracks to find you saying this here.

Cant imagine there are mature minded people that use Lemmy

PewDiePie is the most basic kind of cryptofascist hiding behind a veil of edgy humour and he should not be welcome in the open source community

We reserve it for the “hitler did nothing wrong” crowd.

I don’t care if it’s edgy or ironic or earnest because I have no way to know that. Also, if you fuck goats just to be edgy you’re still a goat fucker.

What did pewdiepie do? Not defending him, I dont follow him at all, and I am just wondering.

You will find two major incidents. The bridge incident where he said the n-word in PUBG and a edgy joke where he tried to see how far Fiverr creators would go and asked for a video of people to write "Hitler did nothing wrong" on a sign. He apologized and condemned the behavior for both.

To me it seems like the source of a lot of the negative quick opinions come from a bad article WSJ did on him.

He's also promoted the books of fascist talking heads like Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, and Steven Crowder through his book club.

There's a reason the Christ Church shooter yelled "Subscribe to PewDiePie" besides being a topical meme.

This one I've never heard

Its how you can tell PDP fans weren't paying attention. He promoted it a few times but it didn't gain any traction and he abandoned it.

Or maybe it just didn't help with the fascism allegations from the bridge moment and the Fiverr incidents since those all happened about the same time.

Hell, he had Ben Shapiro host an episode of LWIAY. Sure it wasn't peak genocide apologizer we have now Benny Boy, but he was still a verifiable dick head grifter.

I think this maybe deserves more attention.

Anyhow, I found the video for people curious:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBDNbpWSUx8

So I read up on it again very briefly because that was ages ago but: The story goes in 2017 he paid an Israeli on Fiverr to dress as Jesus and hold a sign declaring that Hitler did nothing wrong. I have not seen the video so I don't know for sure, but apparently he wanted to show how far you can take things with Fiverr without any resistance from Freelancers.

I think he did something very wrong to shock his audience for clicks similar to Logan Paul's disgusting Suicide Forest stunt around that same time and he got a ton of criticism for it. I don't know what happened afterwards because I'm really not in that bubble but I don't think a video likes this makes someone a Nazi and the comment above is a bit of a Fediverse knee-jerk reaction to this kind of stuff. I understand why people would still despise him for that though.

I didn't know about any of this. I don't like him for completely different reasons and I suspect a lot of people will be like that.

Wasn't he big into that whole CS go gambling thing? I actually can't remember when that was that might have been pre-2017

This is just the tip of the iceberg, the example that's easy to cite. Over time in his videos he made a welcoming environment for fascist and hateful groups to feel welcome and at home. The more apt comparison is that if you run a bar, and you don't kick Nazis out, you own a Nazi bar.

I think you are wrong. He did some mistakes but they were not a tip of an iceberg. I was there watching the videos at that time and I never saw anything that fostered a racist or homophobic environment. He didn't make specifically anti-racism content and the only LGBTQ related thing he did was offering a different view on the drama related to a queer make up artist.

He said the n word a few (maybe even several, by now) years ago. Idk if that makes him a nazi but maybe he did something else I haven't heard of

Once. The other big controversy was the Fiverr antisemitic joke.

Oh yea I forgot about that one too

I can see some ytbers be nazis, but not him. I know he said the n word, and even if he maybe had some alt right or similar views back in the day, but he is a genuinely good ytber nowadays imo

Now I really don't want to install Linux.

Yeah and hitler used windows

PewDiePie? Is that really the guy's name? Is that Slavic or something?

His name is Felix, PewDiePie is just his yt handle.

What is the point of this comment? If you have nothing to say just dont say it.

If he's doing it I'm inclined not to do it.

His followers aren't exactly tech savvy so I'm not entirely sure this is going to have much of an effect. Most of his followers are kids who don't even own computers they just have iPads

This might have been partly true 10 years ago. A large majority of his audience is probably adult now.

lets just say his audience isn't tech savy. But somehow they try Linux and like it. I think its definitely a win, because even non tech savvy can enjoy Linux.

Most of Félix's followers are the ones that grew up with him. Those are well in their 30s now. He doesn't make kids content anymore.

You're just hating for the hate. There's a place for that, it's called Reddit.

He's made videos on stoicism, mental awareness, physical health and training. The times of "it's peeeeeeeewdiepieee" are long gone and over, that's what you're still remembering.

I was thinking he's not tech savvy, so he's doing it for the view. I've noticed he's been trying to come back on the YouTube scene, he's been largely supplanted by other YouTuber over the years he was gone

I have to bam communities on the daily, just so I can go one day on Lemmy, just one day, where Linux isn’t shoved down my throat to the point where I don’t wanna hear it anymore

If that's what you want, I feel like this community would be one of the first you'd ban - instead of participating in the comments.

It’s called technology not Linux, I already blocked all the dozens of Linux communities, but the infection keeps spreading

Stop resisting, it will only prolong the pain.

That's 22 minutes of my life. I'll never get back. But at least it's interesting that somebody that popular has decided to go to Linux. On second thought, it wasn't 22 minutes. It was probably more like 10 because I always use 1.5 or 1.75x speed.

Bro, shut the fuck up😊
Nobody cares.
