What is it with every fucking veo3 video being someone talking to the camera?! Artificial slop model tuned on humanmade slop.

I have never in my life respected copyright and I and the things I like are too marginal to be threatened by Disney so destroying Midjourney counts as a win in my book.

I hope this doesn't distract them from their core VR focus.

Tangentially related, and correct me if I'm wrong because I will never in my life watch a "keynote" or whatever it is, but is it me or does "Liquid Glass" look like an accessibility nightmare?

Trump has 3.5 years left as President, but I will be around for 40+ years …

Elon Musk thinking he's going to make it to 90 and more is even more delusional than the Mars stuff.

John McCarthy's really sounding like a typical libertarian prat.

He concludes that since a computer cannot have the experience of a man, it cannot understand a man. There are three
points to be made in reply. First, humans share each other's experiences and those of machines or animals only to a limited extent. In particular, men and women have different experiences.

l.m.f.a.o., we're going there are we now

Looks like shit and it's mostly entirely static because anything with a little more movement would look like complete piss.

Are we talking upscaling DLSS or specifically the frame generation thing that I didn't know existed? The upscaling's alright I think.

I think there is some potential for LLMs in games, in the same way that a game like Façade showed potential for ... being able to create some sort of ... thing. But that would require a little bit of artistic vision and integrity, which obviously AAA studios can't have.
I like the idea of games that are about navigating conversation. But I'm not sure you can ever massage a LLM into being in any way compelling—what I've seen of character·ai is pretty ghastly. Maybe only using it as a parser could work? Might as well just be ELIZA.

Anyway, this quote

“It’s very different,” Mosser said. “But for the first time in my life, I can have a conversation with a character I’ve created. I’ve dreamed of that since I was a kid.”

brings to mind a Nabokov quote I think about a lot.

INTERVIEWER:

E. M. Forster speaks of his major characters sometimes taking over and dictating the course of his novels. Has this ever been a problem for you, or are you in complete command?

NABOKOV:

My knowledge of Mr. Forster’s works is limited to one novel, which I dislike; and anyway, it was not he who fathered that trite little whimsy about characters getting out of hand; it is as old as the quills, although of course one sympathizes with his people if they try to wriggle out of that trip to India or wherever he takes them. My characters are galley slaves.

In “Aquarium” by Farah Al Qasimi, a man gazes at his pet cockatoo and fish as he tries to understand their needs with the help of AI.

Okay?

My stance is that I hate Aella because she exploits her life experience to be a disgusting misogynist and it is morally correct to kinkshame unpleasant heterosexual men who associate with the rationalist sex cult. I'm not interested in other people's hangups beyond that.

I don't know what it is with capitalists and needing to prove to themselves they're aligned with the natural order. I'm a marxist but I can't imagine calling the TRPF a "law of nature". It would be embarrassing!

(I know there are, like, dozens of "scientific communist" diamat weirdos, but for the most part they have rightfully been tied to a tree and left in the 20th century.)

I see now he's also got a supply and demand tattoo*? I don't fucking know. Maybe he thinks red and black is the antifa flag. Maybe he got it for sexy humiliation purposes. Maybe it's faded blue ink.

*"If you want to celebrate [capitalism] with a symbol, you’ll have to get a law of nature tattooed on you."

Cringe but my god the horde of buttmad nazis force me to be on weirdo & girl girl's side

Personally I have more questions about a Rationalist having an anarcho-communist flag tattoo.

The eigenrobot thread he's responding to is characteristically bizarre and gross. You'd think eigenrobot being anti-eugenics is a good thing but he still finds a way to make it suspect. (He believes being unable to make babies is worse than death?)

To be fair I also believe psychology is by and large pseudoscience, but the answer to it is sociology, not the MRI gang.

Touting neuroscience as especially informed and scientific about minds is very brave.

I'm not going to watch more than a few seconds but I enjoyed how awkward Beff Jezos is coming across.

If I understand correctly, the only reason they’re in such low orbit, and thus why there needs to be so fucking many of them, is to have much lower latency compared to geostationary satellites. You know, in case you need to play Quake on your satellite connection.

So like, do we think they outright lie about peer review, or are they asking people with no ressources and better things to do whose reviews consist of plopping the paper into chatgpt?

Ohh, good advice. If you’re infected with covid, I also recommend you make sure to take adequate breaths.

So… They’re going to use the bot trained on wikipedia to rewrite wikipedia. Very much a Pierre Menard type situation.

That OpenAI haven't recalled their product after it's been involved in several violent deaths, that it would even be absurd to suggest they should recall it, really highlights how corrupt and disgusting the industry and the whole structure propping it up are.

tfw your gifted child syndrome resentment of adults is powerful enough to make you forget about your life's work

Yes dude, that's the main thing you should be concerned about of course. AI tools couldn't possibly be bad in and of themselves, it has to be human tampering. You've always been very clear about that part.

The old chestnut that really these days it's women who hold all the power is as old as times. I saw an instance in Perrault's introduction to the tale of Griselidis (1691) and I'm sure you can go much further back. Not sure why we ever even bothered with voting rights, reproductive freedom, or personhood.

Ugh what is it with misogynists and compulsively writing out this nonsense again and again? Just want to punch him on the nose. Make it stop.

I think that §2 (“appearance-based sexual attraction”) will be the part that’s more centrally relevant for cis men (and most trans women)

God I looked into the article this is meant to illustrate, and I have feelings. The idea this mysterious, evocative short story is something to be solved, and that he's somehow cracked the code. And it must be precisely about Dracula. Don't ask yourself why the name comes from Proust, and why the style and themes are so heavily proustian. Proust is not genre literature, it isn't in communication with the literature of ideas, which means it is of no value. Gene Wolfe is genre literature, so the story must be about vampires, and nothing else. Any literary depth is mere distraction, a ruse meant to mislead you and have you fail the test. Can't wait for the rationalist Pale Fire remake!!!

Yeah I couldn't find the strength to even get to the naughty stuff, I gave up after one or two chapters. And I've read through all of HPMOR. 😐

Everyone can also agree that the direct jump from GPT-4o and o3 to GPT-5 was not of similar size to the jump from GPT-3 to GPT-4

Sure babe, you keep telling yourself that.

I'm sorry, I believe that there are legitimate artistic uses of neural networks (and they're never about cutting budget), but this is just fascist aesthetics repurposed to serve anti-Trump messaging. Do not like.

I'm sorry, as in the awful no-effort MIDIs played through a "medieval" soundfont youtube spammed me with? Jesus Christ that's embarrassing.
