$1050 is the new $750. LOL.
I was prepared to pay $1,000 plus extra for the Walnut faceplate and controller.
Having to get the 2TB version to do that stings a little.

It’s really unfortunate how much Anthony Bourdaine looks like Jeffery Epstein. Anthony doesn’t deserve that
I literally thought it was Epstein on first look
Eh, we are currently experiencing what is called “steam engine time”. Tons of people are working on this AI tech at the same time and are sometimes inventing the same tech nearly simultaneously, the same as with steam engines hundreds of years ago. All of the conditions were there: Decades of previous research, new breakthroughs, fast enough hardware and enough capital to fund it all.
Sam Altman is a crook, but if it wasn’t for him, someone else would have done a similar thing in his place.
At 750, its perfection.
Yeah, I bought my current pc for that price in 2018. The steam machine is a step up in every department and comes preset to play games. At that price I’d get one for each member of my family so we could game together.
I’ll turn to burgling data centers before I turn to steaming my pc.
Typo?
There’s good sport in burgling
You haven’t lived if you haven’t had a good burgle
That would have been awesome ):
That was the price I was kinda hoping for.
Well, maybe next time.
To anyone that gives money to the ai companies:
Fuck You.
Ah yes, the classic blame consumers for big business decisions.
Could push for government regulation/oversight or even developmental efforts to relieve the supply constraints.
Nah consumer bad 😠
Help me out, is “it’s small” the only reason to get this if you have a microcenter near you? Seems one could do much better with a mediumish SFF case
It has CEC too which you can’t get from a standard PC build.
Yes. You can build a more powerful system for the same or even slightly less, but it will be larger.
It’s a console-like form factor, and is pretty powerful. Most people I know, especially the ones interested in the steam machine, are intimidated by / don’t feel they have the time and knowledge needed to build a PC yourself. I see this less as a device intended for PC users/power users, and more targeted towards people leaving console ecosystems. It seems like a really good device for that, too.
Gamers Nexus says it’s about $70 more than self-built. (for the 512GB model)
So, you’re paying $70 for a small form factor PC in a custom case, with SteamOS. Another thing is that you can choose to buy a Steam Controller for $20 less than buying the controller by itself and you also don’t have to wait in the pre-order line for the standalone controller (which is currently extended into 2027).
The hardware shortage makes it not a great time to buy a gaming PC, but in the current market it’s priced competitively and you get to jump the line buying a Steam Controller as well.
With the specs they’re working with and compatibility, my son is going to build me one.
Gonna call it a Hot Steamer
I’m calling $2500 by this time next year, for the base model.
Personally I wouldn’t buy it for “750”, because 750 in the US means more like 1000 in the EU. Now, if it was 750 in the EU - fantastic.
What? In the US it currently costs 1049$, in the EU 1039€. If it was 750$ it would also be around the same price in Euro
In EU taxes are included while in the US they’re not. Or something, I don’t know I’m from the EU.
Allow me to Bing that for you
Don’t worry, I already asked Jeeves
Lycos has the answer
Isn’t the EU price pre-vat?
VAT is 21% at least in romania. That would knock it up to about $1210. It’s a ridiculous price for what it is.
I love steam but that thing just isn’t my cup of tea.
Edit: I got lost in the currency conversions.
nah, prices in the eu must always include vat
Everything here always includes vat, including steam
Not for me it isn’t, at least when I tried to check out the Steam Deck 512 the price stayed at 779€, so for the machine it should be the same. I agree the price is way too high, plus I have 22% VAT so it would be even worse for me lol
Well, my bad for generalizing. Looks like prices are different in various EU countries.
In my country the cheapest model is about $1200 USD (vs $1049 USD), while the most expensive one is over $1600 USD (vs $1349 USD). Absolutely ridiculous prices, but I’m glad to hear some countries have slightly better ones.
EU tends to include taxes in the sticker price, the US doesn’t.
I probably wouldn’t buy it for more than $400 tbh.
And I say that as someone that can’t afford to exist, so I really wouldn’t ever buy it.
My limit for a console is $500. That’s why the Switch 2 will probably be the last one I buy for a very long time.
I’m not in the market for the Steam Machine, but if I was, $1100 Cdn might be reasonable for this offering, I’d consider it.
Still hoping we can do better on pricing for the frame, that’s what I really want but I’ll wait a year if the launch prices are over $1000 Cdn ($700US)
PC are going to stop existing and we will all be streaming “our computers” from data centers a to a screen.
I wrote a comment on a German forum around 16/17 years ago that predicted how game and computer streaming services (Onlive had just been launched, there were also a few non-gaming cloud computing services for home users) could result in personal computing going extinct, because data centers providing these streaming services would buy up components, leaving nothing PCs.
I’m usually very, very wrong with my predictions, but this was my Nostradamus moment, I suppose.
Gamers finding excuses for their favorite billionaire being a capitalist dick by blaming another capitalist dick.
Not sure what you’re getting at, here. Are you expecting Steam to sell these at a loss (or even just break-even) out of the goodness of their hearts or something?
And then have scalpers resell at a tidy profit because they’re selling the hardware for less than the current market rates, for that matter…
I’m getting at the fact that nobody from steam ever said it was originally priced at 750, but “gamers” are saying so because “Gab is a good billionaire”. Whatever he does, he will always get his ass kissed because he runs a “convenient” store front.
Steam is a disgusting business that that made hundred of millions by promothing gambling for kids, has sub 300 employees while making record profits year after year. Literately one of the most profitable company in the world, that gets 30% on each fucking game sold (blablabla industry standard bullshit, epic takes 12% btw).
So yeah, if you part of the people that defends that type of business, you’re just another one of capitalism’s little bitch is what I’m getting at.
“Gabe is a good billionaire” is a possible reason to make that claim. The other is to remind people to be mad at the datacentres gobbling up all the hardware. The latter seems to be how everyone is interpreting it based on the other comment chains under this post.
Yes… Actually billionaires and capitalist corrupt dicks are exactly who are to blame. But also Americans who voted for this over the last 20-50 years hold blame too. And probably some EU for not holding Americans accountable with stronger resistance… You know what. The whole planet is getting exactly what it deserves.
But there is a supply crisis? What?
You’re right, I repent and will be contributing to Gabe’s next 500 million yacht. I hear they actually wanted to sell the steam machine for 20$ but had to bump the price because of some greedy practice by other businesses.
You’re not like the other gamers. You’re unique and special. There might be someone in the world who doesn’t know that about you, so you better go correct them!
