First, a hardware question. I'm looking for a computer to use as a... router? Louis calls it a router but it's a computer that is upstream of my whole network and has two ethernet ports. And suggestions on this? Ideal amount or RAM? Ideal processor/speed? I have fiber internet, 10 gbps up and 10 gbps down, so I'm willing to spend a little more on higher bandwidth components. I'm assuming I won't need a GPU.

With talk of Android 16 having a Linux terminal, I'm curious what people have already hosted from Android with emulators like Termux or rooted terminal, and/or ideas of things that make sense (or would at least be cool) to run or host from a tablet or phone if/when it's officially supported.

I got a stack of PCS that are very similar if not identical. Third gen i7, 8 gigs of ram, one terabyte hdd, all but one are the same HP model with the same motherboard, etc too. I upgraded the RAM in a few of them, and I have enough spare TB hard drives to put an extra in each. Two have Nvidia GeForce 210 gpus, and the unique one out of the bunch I'll probably throw in a spare RX 570 I have.

I recently set up a probe on a box in my home lab for Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) that does distributed monitoring of access to various Internet services to monitor censorship. Currently have nice long docker compose file that hosts my PiHole V6 container (along with a bunch of other containers) however, reason i ask this question is because whenever I go to pull an updated image and recreate the container I experience about 20 minutes of no DNS resolution which to my knowledge is due to the NTP clock being out of sync.

I have a "homelab" (well it's not a lab hosted at home, but on the cloud) running k3s and hosting my website, IRC and Matrix. I'm moving all of these services to Podman, since it's easier and you don't have to deal with the headaches of k3s.

I dont mean to be a bother, but recently i got wiregaurd setup so myself and my friends can access resources such as my server. i have it setup for the client and the server to only allow 192.168.8.170. To be tunneled, so for example my friends can google and resolve DNS just fine and its all in there network, then when they want to access the server it will be at 192.168.8.170 and the docker services will run on ports for example 8080:80. and to be honest it works great for me and friend 1. but for friend 2 DNS doesnt resolve???

I have no idea why this is happening on my arch linux machine. I was trying to set it up as a client device, and now i have no internet connection on my wired network. This is bare metal not docker. I just wanted to add the device to my tailnet.

I've gotten a bit tired of Nextcloud as of late an I'm curious it is a viable alternative. I like having Nextcloud Talk but I can live without it.

I got this thing in my home. How can I turn this into a home server?

I have my home server apps configured with NGINX proxy manager and DuckDNS to access remotely, but about three weeks ago DuckDNS URLs stopped working on my home network. I can access 192.168.XXX.XXX:1234 on the home network but myapp.duckdns.org times out.

I have a bridge device set up with systemd, br0, that replaces my primary ethernet eth0. With the br0 bridge device, Incus is able to create containers/VMs that have unique MAC addresses that are then assigned IP addresses by my DHCP server. (sudo incus profile device add eth0 nic nictype=bridged parent=br0) Additionally, the containers/VMs can directly contact the host, unlike with MACVLAN.

I self-host a couple of services, but I haven’t exposed anything outside my home network. I want to self-host my calendar, but not sure if I can do it without exposing it. Any recommendations on the best way to go about this? For those who do self-host a calendar service, how do you keep it secure?

So background, my kid has seizures often. He is currently on 5 different medications to try to control it(plus 1 for sleeping and 1 for his liver enzymes) plus severe non verbal autism so he can't tell us if he already had his meds. Currently when it's medication time, it's always "did you give him his meds yet?" and we have no way of tracking how many seizures he actually has besides "alot more recently" or "it's gone down recently". Yes he had multiple doctors and this is NOT a post looking for health advice.

I picked day one up as a journaling app many years ago, and have enjoyed it. But I've now mostly left the apple ecosystem and I'm ready for a new solution. An important feature to me is the calendar view that both shows you what days you have entries for and allows you to see previous year's entries on a day. The lack of this feature knocks out the most recommended alternatives on this community (joplin, obsidian, and logseq come to mind). Journey cloud and diarium are strong picks, but I'd prefer non proprietary and stronger self hosting support. Along with better platform availability. Memoria is also in consideration, but the documentation is pretty light and it's hard to tell if it will function in the way I expect. Likewise with memos, which I've seen suggested on here.

I'm having trouble staying on top of updates for my self hosted applications and infrastructure. Not everything has auto updates baked in and some things you may not want to auto update. How do y'all handle this? How do you keep track of vulnerabilities? Are there e.g. feeds for specific applications I can subscribe to via RSS or email?

I need some help with my setup please, I am fairly new to selfhosting and the information I found searching hasn't helped me understand what is wrong. But I have miniPC running proxmox with all my stuff running jellyfin/arr stack etc. I then have another machine running my file share using SMB (maybe this is the wrong way to do it). I can add the share to my datacenter in proxmox and see it and but I cannot get my unprivileged container to write to the share. I can get privileged containers to write when I mount using cifs but this I read this is bad practice.

Almost forgot before going to bed but I feel bi-weekly is a good rhythm for this.

My main use currently is a modded Minecraft server. But I want a VPS over one of those Minecraft host specifically because I plan on messing around with docker containers later and hosting my own Lemmy instance. Currently I have an openVZ server from TNA hosting because it was like $50 a year. But it's not powerful enough for the Minecraft modpack.

I've got a mini pc which is running always and another one which consumes a lot more power for e.g. jellyfin.

The official docker image is still at v0.11 and was last updated in 2016. It looks like maybe trunk is at 0.12, but, as far as I can tell, that a rolling release. My prosody install is too important to go with a rolling release.

Currently have : Raspberry Pi 3 ( running Kodi on OSMC ) and an Old stereo system ( only Aux input ) . I’d like to use the Pi as bluetooth to Aux converter for the stereo.

I'm in the process of setting up backups for my home server, and I feel like I'm swimming upstream. It makes me think I'm just taking the wrong approach.

I've used nginx proxy manager as a reverse proxy for a while now and want to switch because some set ups don't work well with it. Tried nginx as a reverse proxy but seems kinda complicated and I just don't really like it... I've heard good things about Caddy and how it automatically does the certs for you but heard it doesn't mesh well with Cloudflare proxy or something along those lines. Caddy is definitely a contender.

I'm not tech illiterate, but it's also not my job or anything. That said I managed to figure out how to get a synology up and running and it hosts my Jellyfin and *arrs. Nothing too exciting. I also have a couple of vps's that I use for nextcloud, a recipe server, all in docker containers. Not nothing but also, not the hardest thing to accomplish.

Hi everyone, I am running truenas scale on a modest home NAS. I have got some of my services tunneling to some subdomains via cloud flare zero trust and it seems to be fine. I am looking for advice on how to self host a blog and if I can continue that same method. It would be great to run it to the main domain instead of a sub domain, but honestly I don’t care too much. I expect none to very little traffic. I am looking for an app that I can run relatively easy and makes blogging for myself (images + text) as frictionless as possible. I am having trouble finding a guide for this and any that I do are on running much older versions of truenas scale.

Basically, I'd like to have my own domain e.g onlinepersona@mydomain.com but not go through the hassle of hosting my own email service: I'd like to use another service that handled SPF, DMARC, and whatever else for me, grab the emails from their service using POP, and make it available to my email client on android and Linux using IMAP. SMTP will be through the third party.

Hello everyone I've been looking for a solution to replace Spotify, for me and my family. I already self-host some services, such as Jellyfin and Sonarr/Radarr For music however, my actual setup is the following : - synchronize my music folder on my phone with my NAS - download on the phone or on my computer However, I struggle with finding new music and having an easy way to add music.

How would or do you backup your home server? I don't have enough physical storage (for now) at home to store some backups, so I want to upload it to the cloud. Of course I want the backup to be encrypted, but I don't want to enter the password every time by server does a backup. I am currently using borg on my PC and do it manually. How do I create a encrypted backup without entering the key manually? Do I hardcode it somewhere? Don't really like that. I am also fine with trying other backup software.

I've been thinking of self hosting a mastodon (gotosocial, more specifically) + a matrix server on an old computer I have, but sometimes I might need to turn it off for 2 days or more (not to mention some energy or internet outages that might happen here)
