People praising this are unaware of exactly how many different companies have our data. Google works with thousands of different companies that collect our data, amazon works with thousands, facebook works with thousands every internet provider and TV company sells your shit to thousands of different companies

For who?
Data brokers will now have to navigate this law and enforce it or face fines at significant cost to their business model; your data is worth ~$200 a year and they would be fined that much per day if they don’t comply. And audits are coming to ensure compliance. So yes, it will be a big waste of time, but not for us. It’s data brokers who will need to ensure they’re enforcing the policy or face fines that well exceed the cost of business.
Lastly, California started it but now other states are looking to implement similar laws, so its only going to get better.

Trump Rapes KidsLol. No, they can’t. They can request that their data be deleted in one request. They can’t actually go delete the data from all the servers and backups from all those websites and companies. They can’t verify that anyone else has done that. They can’t verify that even if they theoretically have it doesn’t work like the systems where things are just flagged as redacted or edited out.
For the statement they make to be true this would a thing with an overseeing body with enough power to ensure that all companies and websites store their data in the same way or with perfect knowledge and access to that data and all backups and the ability to fully wipe any data or backup data tied to a given name, email address, social security number, and whatever selection of browser and device fingerprints the user could supply and ensure that data was unrecoverable.
I can make something way better than this. Since any folk requesting that are concerned with places keeping their data, they wouldn’t even have to give their name let alone any other personal information. It would just be a very pleasing and official looking button, and when they click it there would be a reassuring popup informing them that:
“Success! Your request for every other person, company, website, UFO, talking animal, or fantasy creature who may be spying on you in this entire universe and any potential alternate universe to immediately stop doing that and delete any information they may have collected has been sent!”
It would be pretty much just as effective and universally (multiversally?) legally relevant as this is.

I wonder if I should add a little footnote warning that due to relativity in this universe and the potential for variations in the speed and direction of the flow of time in any other than may exist some recipients may not receive the request before the relatively brief lifetime of humanity as a whole has ended.
How about shipping them from gathering the data to begin with?

I’m looking for a job. I’m pretty sure it won’t make a difference if I just post my CV publicly on Facebook or CraigsList at this point. Seeing how many AI rejections I have gotten, I’m sure every major tech company knows all my details by now.
CorkyskogOh yeah… There are like only a couple companies that handle the background profiling of candidates, this was true even before AI, but now they use AI as part of those systems. Once you are rated by them once, that’s it. They just will reuse that profile and you will be ignored in all future postings if the profile isn’t “desirable” based off their metrics.
I highly recommend you find someone who professionally assists people create CVs and applications that understands how modern AI applications work. They will know how to refashion everything so your application looks new to the AI and will give you tips to game the AI.
They will probably charge like $250 for the help, but it will be well worth it. If you have any colleges, especially community colleges near you, they might offer this service for free to basically anyone in state.
Or just reject working with any company that cant be assed to have a human review applications.
Must be nice being in a place where you can be picky about what job you take. I’ve been unemployed for over 12 months now and would take basically anything at this point regardless of my morals.

The fact that it’s not as fucked up as in the states is little protection, just look at how chat control got shoved up our bums.
Laughing at America is a splendid cynical feel-good distraction, but let’s not kid ourselves and fight for every bit of privacy they are going to try their hardest to wrest away.
I feel like America holds the world back largely by it being so simple for other places to say, “At least we’re not like them.”

GDPR already allows us to delete data with just a request, which is what the comment you’re refering to references.

How about passing a law that makes it illegal to sell any of someone’s data without express written consent for each sale.
And it’s explicitly opt-in, not opt-out.

Yep. “You must consent otherwise you’re opting out of everything in existence and must go live in a cave.” It’s not consent if they didn’t even ask, and it’s not consent if you want to say no but there’s literally no other option in existence. Just opt out of the whole internet and mobile phones I guess.
I’m glad we have options here in Europe. Not many, but there are at least 3 mobile and internet providers at my location, so whenever one tries to pull something like this, I just call them that I’m switching providers. I’ve netted a permanent 50% discount and even managed to convince them to keep the discount at my old flat (which was a student’s shared flat where my friends still live) and also transfer it to my new home I have with my partner.
As far as I know, they can give you massive discounts, but you have to be willing to go through hell and run into a good call operator.
But also, that was like 10 years ago and I didn’t need to do it again. I can imagine that in the age of clankers, things may be a lot different (also with the transition to late-stage capitalism and enshittification).

What is there to be worried about? We just want to collect valid data for our operations and to share with our 21,678 partners. It’s basically legitimate interest.

And what most websites doing is actually not allowed according to the GDPR, it’s supposed to be a one-click opt-out (which would be easy to automate with a browser extension). Unfortunately, the relevant court is in Ireland, which is the EU’s hub for US big tech.

before you just used your favorite plugin and be done with it. you can’t do that anymore, because you now have to allow for a cookie saying you don’t want their cookies and you have to trust them to respect that. if that cookie is not there, they will bother you for the rest of their lives.

A nice thought, but how to enforce this law? How to prove they gave or sold data? It’s easy for them to hide/delete records of data transferred.

Something I never see mentioned in discussions about privacy and “deleting your data": all of these websites store information in databases, and databases are (usually) backed up on a regular schedule. This means that the databases in their entirety are written to tape or optical drive or whatever format, in a form where they could be remounted/restored in their entirety if necessary. Even if your data is “deleted” from the current active instance of a database, no company goes into all (or any) of the backed-up copies of that database to delete that same data there (and even when you delete something from the current active instance of a database, the deletions are logged in the audit tables and so are never truly “deleted").
So it is impossible in a practical sense to truly delete your personal data, regardless of what any law says. It’s not even possible to make it inaccessible to AI, since most likely when websites sell their data to AI companies, they are selling database backups that predate AI.
This along with the present “child protection” efforts around the world doesnt really target the underlying fascist mess which encapsulates the digital sphere. Deletion like this is a move forward, dont take me wrong - but in a way it is a strategic diversion for fascists to more discretely sell your data.
They will just offshore the servers and nothing changes… Like the Do Not Call list, looks great on paper, I’m still getting calls from spoofed numbers from abroad. US/California law means nothing in India.
