DHS is expanding its use of administrative subpoenas, which don’t come from judges.
Reddit, Meta, and Google voluntarily “complied with some of the requests” for identifying details of users critical of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sent as part of a recent wave of administrative subpoenas the Department of Homeland Security has been distributing to Big Tech the past few months, according to an anonymously sourced New York Times report.

Expected for tech companies the money is all they care about.
Everybody likes to bash on the tech companies–and they behave horribly–, but really that largely because they make such insane money right now. This has been a thing in other industries and still is. Look at Walmart. Tech is just the new big thing distracting from the capitalist system being the problem.
Voluntarily sounds like they just on a whim called up DHS and handed over info, which also wouldn’t surprise me, but in this case they capitulated.
Shocking that companies that do evil and have clearly psychopathic leadership would do such a thing.
And this is the same for any Online/Cloud/whatever storage on SomeoneElsesComputer™ . If Europe or any international company wants to not be completely fucked at every turn, they really have to stop supplying the industrial espionage pipeline. Do companies relying on AWS/GCP/Azure/Slop365 really think their R&D isn’t just stolen as a matter of “national security”? With the way things are going IP should be unenforceable due to these implications.

I feel Discord is just as widely known as Reddit. People are also more likely to send messages on discord that they may have considered private (even of they shouldn’t have)
danDiscord doesn’t get as many clicks compared to the larger companies, since fewer people know about it. For articles like this, news publishers always list the most well-known brands.

Everyone making stuff wants arbitrary power application, so it happens. That’s how the world works.
Also people without wisdom are sometimes still very intelligent. In nature viruses that kill everything don’t survive because they kill everything. In human societies a huge part of those intelligent enough want to kill everything they don’t like. Or to kill all their enemies they can. They don’t think what happens next, where the emptiness is filled by something they haven’t evolved their tactics for. Something less predictable than what they are fighting now.
I’m thinking of Israelis right now, but it happens everywhere, the general consensus becoming that you should kill all you can of what you don’t like.
I mean, were they intelligent they’d understand this, it would seem, and at the same time there’s an unexpected direction from which disagreement comes - Tolkien’s thing in the ending of LOTR where Gandalf says about future generations having different weeds to root out from their fields, and that not being the responsibility of the current generation. So i don’t know.

Anyway. The Nazi model of society, which is most similar to this, has failed. Not because of a war lost, as it was spreading to many other countries and wasn’t really abruptly removed from Germany after that war. Simply because it became inefficient. It was phased out, slowly replaced. I think that’s what will happen here too. But that might be another 20-30-40 years, so we are going to live in a not very nice world.
About Israel - perhaps in such a world I’ll move there. I don’t like the general worldview of people living there, it’s really fascist, but in a miserable way, I’d prefer something like the atmosphere in Foucault’s Pendulum by Eco if we have to do fascism. I don’t like that most Israelis I’ve met perceive civilized discussion as an insult. But if I’m going to have children some day, they’d rather be among “their own tribe” by those rules which are coming to prevalence everywhere.

Idk. If it was in their TOS yes they agreed to it. But if the company sait it would only give info if requested by a warrant and they given it without any consideration. They can be sued .

This is the definition of economic fascism. They aren’t being squeezed by the government, they have lucrative contacts for openly sharing this info. The businesses and the us government are becoming one.

It wasn’t that they were invited, it’s that they showed up. I can understand a CEO not going full on resistance mode, but how hard would it be for them to just say “sorry but I’m going to be in Tokyo (or wherever) that day so I can’t make it to your dinner”?
It would be fairly easy for them to be neutral, which is what I’d expect from a CEO. But nope, they’re all on board the Trump train.

I was banned permanently for telling a story from when I was a child and I fought back against a bully. That was in their eyes advocating violence.

Every US based company is pretty much legally obliged to hand over everything, even if they collect data outside of US.

It used to be that courts would slow it down. But the Trump administration is showing that they don’t care about the law. How they have been weaponizing ICE, it’s pretty clear cut that they will use or abuse any tool to get their way.
