Meshtastic

Assuming i never had to call anyone more than a few miles from me anyway, how practical would it be to stop having a phone altogether and just use MeshCore or Meshtastic for short range communication? What troubles would i run into from not having a phone?

I shall soon be getting a Rak WisMesh Tag and currently have a Heltec MeshPocket 10,000 mAh that is currently set up as a mesh core companion. I know for a fact that there is some minimal meshtastic activity in my area and there is no meshcore activity in my area at all yet.

I got this idea of making an mmo that uses meshtastic devices to play. The core gameplay would simply be trading random token and phrases and lore could be part of token.

I live in Western Washington, and we have very tall (130ft+) Douglas fir everywhere. I have a few on my property and I’m coming up with a plan to hang a node relatively high up.

Before i break out the solder gun and make one myself, i wanted to ask. Is there a unit that uses magsafe magnets that does wireless charging pass through? The idea would be to have this device on the back of a phone and when a charge is applied while it’s on a phone it passes the charge through to the phone.

I love the relatively new feature that allows you to update radio firmware directly through the app. Because of it, I haven’t been checking the Flasher for updates. Now I see that I’m several version behind. My app is still showing 2.7.19 as the latest Alpha. The Flasher has 2.7.24 available.

If I understand correctly line of sight, and height, are key to extending how far you can transmit. What tricks have others used to gain height around their area? I’m kicking around a lot of ideas that range from a flagpole in my backyard to asking the local musicality if I can mount a node on our water tower. What has given you the most success for extending range in a tricky area?

Hm, I have an issue my the Solar node. It heats up too much in the sun. The panel getting hot might be one thing but the inside of the box where the batteries are? That worries me.

I recently bought a Lilygo T-Deck Plus and had assumed it would include an antenna, since i ordered it with an external antenna. Today it arrived and apparently doesn’t come with any external antenna, just a hole in the top with a rubber bung where one would go.

Meshtastic uses open source hardware, right? Does that mean it’s possible to build radio receivers by ordering the parts and assembling them yourself, Ikea style? If yes, then how can I go about doing this? I am in Canada if that is relevant

I’m wanting to put up a node on a pole, but my yard is absolutely chocked full of trees, and so solar is just not possible here. Has anyone tried to see if they could power a mesh node with the wind? I’m thinking perhaps the wind could charge a 5V battery, which would then keep the mesh node running.

Is it possible and does it make sense to link 2 nodes through TCP/IP? My mindset is that of comparing Meshtastic and reticulum and how it may make sense to link nodes over IP as the lora net is built out for wider propagation?

I’ve been carrying a T-1000e around for a month or so and its been a lot of fun seeing all the new node notifications pop up. It feels good to know that there are more of y’all out there.

Hey ya’ll, I’ve been looking at the Station G2 for a long time as a home node, but I’ve also been waiting an equally long time for it to come back into stock. It seems like its never going to at this point, so I want to find a comparable alternative. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Some time ago I bought a LilyGo module tuned at 433 MHz, but with the built in antenna I couldn’t reach anyone. Is this to be expected? Can I put the module to some use?

Hope its ok to post here. Its not exactly a meshtastic project per-say but I think its nifty so thought I would share.

Each packet received by a node has two numeric values - SNR and RSSI. Big values mean good connection, small values mean bad connection.

Is it possible? How many messages does a node store in it’s internal memory? How to access them via terminal? If node is restarted, are they erased?

meshtastic already has one, but Meshcore didnt until now.

EDIT: FIXED ALREADY. thanks to @linuxguy@piefed.ca - location report accuracy is set by going to the Channels menu and opening the settings for the default zero channel (or whatever channel you are sending location data on). Not obvious way to do it!

So, I’m looking into getting commercially available meshtastic nodes. Buying a bulk set of like 5 of them, and handing them out as birthday presents to my friends to help adoption in the area. A few of them have expressed interest in what I’ve been experimenting with, but don’t want (or can’t afford) to invest themselves.

I’ve got my Chatter2.0 up and running but earlier today, after getting the 5v boost board and adding/removing/shuffling it between the LiPo charging board to try and fix an incorrect power display, I found a new problem. I’m encountering an issue where if the chatter2.0 receives a DM it flashes the DM on screen, reboots immediately after, the sending node does not show the msg was received, and the chatter doesn’t show the msg after its reboot.

I got some WisBlock base station stuff on order from RAKwireless, as I am in need of a high power base station at my GF’s house. It’s going to get something resembling coverage in an entire half of my city that has no nodes apparently- and I’m going to double it up as a ping-able weatherstation too.

So, I’ve been watching a few intros on meshtastic, just to get the basics down, but I believe my situation requires a proper long term plan. Basically, I live practictally in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by mountains, and there are unlikely to be any other meshtastic nodes around, so I will probably need a setup that is partially based on repeaters,

I’m in Canada, with respect to ordering hardware. I think what I am trying to do is setup an always-on node to add to the mesh, but I’m only just dipping my toes into the guide and meshtastic to begin with.

I 3D-printed one of these cases to use with a XIAO nRF52 / SX1262 Meshtastic node.

I just bought a T1000-E Tracker with the hope of putting it on my dog. I don’t let him run loose, but he’s gotten out a few times and it makes me crazy when it happens. Having a way to locate him would be a relief.

My eyes are not what they used to be, and I sometimes have trouble reading the messages in the channels. I may be missing something obvious, but I can’t find any options to configure how they look. Does anyone know if there’s a way? Being able to make the text a little larger, and to turn off the background colors under the text, would make it a lot easier for me to use.

Hi. I’m just getting started with this and I want to put an antenna on my house. I live in Washington state right along the US/Canada border and I’m hoping to be able to contact users on both sides. My house is at about 200’ elevation and the roof is around 25’. I can easily attach an antenna to an unused chimney I have. The roof is metal if that matters.
