Some of the Mario games aren’t on there because Nintendo sued them, but otherwise Vimm’s Lair is still a thing.
OpenAI is buying significantly more RAM than they actually need. They only need 30% of what they’re buying to actually build their data centers.
This is just a step on the way towards digital feudalism. Sites like this being taken down is the point, as sites like this are only useful for people who own hardware.

I’m not saying that’s wrong, but it sounds like you’re not hosting it. And I’m not either (can’t spare the space).
I’m just impressed by how much of the tech world shrugs off these horrible losses of critical infrastructure as “well, someone somewhere will fix it.” When projects get shut down “someone will pick it up and continue it”.
The good will and resources of underappreciated people are not an infinite resource we can rely on to keep making miracles happen for nothing, especially as the number of people with CAPACITY and skill to spare for good will keeps getting eaten away by our dystopia. And we’re not that far away from “I’d like to run a box to host 10 Tb of Anna’s Archive. The hardware will cost $4000 and the electricity per month will cost another $400.” At some point we either stop the attack on our futures, or accept that it’s over.
I’ve got ~20TB I could spare forever, and ~80TB I could spare temporarily. I could also hunt down a few of my unused 8 and 16TB drives as well, but those don’t have the redundancy of the other volumes. I bought a fresh batch of drives for my media collection to expand into last year, so I paid normal prices for these drives
Realistically, it would likely be broken up into smaller chunks. For instance, each console could be broken up and sorted by name, if it’s too large for a single torrent.
Individuals may not be able to afford the 390TB of storage for the entire thing… But plenty of people could spare a few MB to seed the “NES” section, or 398GB to seed the “PSX” section. How do I know? Because I have 398GB of PSX games being seeded on my NAS. It’s the entire PSX collection. And since no more PSX games are getting released, the torrent has been alive for literal years now. From that original 398GB, I have a ratio of over 300. That’s almost 120TB of upload traffic, purely from a PSX torrent.
And for the more modern systems, (which take exponentially more storage), those could be broken apart into more manageable chunks. For instance, the entire Xbox 360 collection is anywhere from 7-21TB, depending on how it is stored. Maybe the 7TB would be palatable, but it could even be broken apart further. For instance, maybe it could be broken into A-G, H-M, and N-Z (or whatever most evenly splits the collection into three separate torrents) to encourage more seeders.
Only discovered it a few weeks ago. Was thinking about setting up a mirror and my eyes popped out at the size. The cost and legality is already a Big Deal but that is kind of a showstopper. Also when I floated the idea I got wishlists. People suck.

Even last night we had a power surge and my nas went down. Back up with no errors, but I got real worried about HDD costs for a moment there.
It wouldn’t be necessary for IA to go under. If push came to shove, they could just downsize and be forced to decide what to delete. They’re probably sort of already doing that but for stuff they have not yet archived. What do you acquire verses what do you delete.

Sincerely… if this site goes under due to “AI costs” it was desired or doomed to happen. No capital squeeze deletes data. Yes, an idiot can spin critical drives into oblivion, but is that a site to mourn? Never. This maintainer is better than that and citing BS to avoid maintaining their server because they think they need a modern upgrade, and moronic tariffs messed with the time frame.
They were the best for grabbing any classic games. Fuck this AI craze and what is doing to hardware/hosting costs.

Entire categories are easy to download with a simple curl call.

I wonder if there is something like sharing your pc processing hardware for protein folding and other medical research, but for something like this. Sharing part of your hard drive space, which could serve as a store for archiving something like this. I guess you’d need a bunch of duplication and how to account for people turning off their computers. Idk, just a thought, probably wouldn’t work.

But I think I get what you’re saying, where it’d be nice if you could just say to the internet at large “here’s 5TB of storage to play with on a reasonable internet connection” and the entire universe of torrents would magically figure out what blocks of data to put on your drive to ensure enough duplication for all torrents, regardless of their size.

I’m sorry but this is bullshit. For basic storage you absolutely don’t need a lot of RAM or SSDs, older gen hard drives are extremely easy to find and very cheap. People have been hypnotized into believing they absolutey definitely need the latest gen of hardware, without realizing it’s useless, and it’s the only kind of hardware that knows shortages and high prices.
edit : okay seems i’ve overplayed my hand a little here. My personal experience comes from buying used hardware which is still going pretty cheap but obviously that’s a dicey sell for professional hosting.
The same mechanical hard drive I bought for $250 three years ago is now going for $500 online USED. I was lucky enough to see a Microcenter listing them as in-stock for $410 about two months ago and drove an hour each way to get the last one. I haven’t seen them available new since.

In the past several months, many specialized download managers were created that completely bypassed the site, donation messages, and download protections. Some of these download managers locked certain features behind a paywall that required users to pay in order to gain access. The use of Myrient for commercial, for-profit purposes has always been strictly forbidden. Such egregious and abusive usage of the site cannot be tolerated anymore.
I read it which is why I was surprised, because the front page gives the impression that unrestricted free access is kind of its shtick?
There’s a concerted effort across many dataholders (at least /r/dataholders for sure) to make a full site wide backup across at least 3 copies across volunteers machines before it shuts down.
Alongside the backup team, another team is working on the best way to distribute to others after that (magnet links, archive.org, etc.).

If you go to Vimm’s Lair right now, you’ll see, in the place of download buttons, text that says something to the effect of “This download has been removed at the request of the copyright holder”
The files are still hosted on the site, but they removed the download buttons to appease our bourgeoisie overlords. You can install a browser script that puts them back though

You can easily downloaded a torrent of all games before the CD era and it’ll fit nicely in a few TB.
They have every available variant of every game, so there are anywhere between 2-10 copies of the same game for each console it was released on.

With a large number of servers and the aforementioned existing monthly deficit in excess of $6000 out of pocket, there is no way to pay for the increased hosting and hardware upgrade costs.
There are still many other smaller reasons, I could go on and on about them, but nobody would want to read it.
In short, I can no longer afford to run the site.

Just a reminder: this was never the sole source of any data. It does not need to be backed up. If you’re genuinely interested in preservation, try not to get swept up in the hype around this site going down, because there’s a mess of confusion being spread by people who mean well but do not understand the situation.
This does suck, it was a good easily-accessible public source of this data, but only convenience is lost.

Various websites hosting individual romsets, a good chunk of it is on archive.org, there are projects like mariocube, basically a lot of different places depending on what you’re after. And there are some private invite-only data troves the scale of myrient as well.
Of note, the preservation scene uses dat files to distribute metadata about the data in question, allowing managers like ROMVault to take a pile of files and rename/move them into a file structure designating what they are and confirming that they’re undamaged. If you’re going to start trying to collect, look into doing it this way, rather than trying to just mirror someone else’s work.
How long until these are all banned or blocked by isps ? And illegal to use a VPN . I think the corpos are catching on that we dont give a fuck about new games and they will come after Roms.
